Chapter Nine

ARDEN stared down at the plans for the Riverside Halloween celebration without really seeing them. Despite the charm Whimsy had thrown so that Arden could sleep without nightmares of the sacrificed alpha, he’d still tossed and turned, unable to switch his mind off. He was worried about Julian, who still wasn’t answering his phone and hadn’t bothered to check in. Something could have gone wrong—it was even possible Julian had run afoul of the dark pack, but there was no way to know. There was also the matter of having to return to Georgia so they could cleanse the glyph, and of locating where Eli’s pack had been taken to, if any of them were even still alive. And over and above everything else was Arden’s growing awareness of Eli, and the effect they were having on one another.

Thoughts of Eli had occupied him most of the night, and he felt a bit guilty that with all the issues they were facing, he couldn’t get Eli out of his mind. Maybe it was the bond that was affecting him, because what he wanted more than anything else was to have Eli’s arms around him again. Eli had made him feel safe when he’d been as terrified as he’d ever been in his life, and he couldn’t help wanting to feel that security again.

He completely understood that Eli needed to concentrate on finding his pack; they were his friends, his family, and they were in danger. If his parents or Julian or Whimsy had been kidnapped, Arden would be going out of his mind with worry, so he could imagine what Eli was feeling. It made sense that Eli wanted to put personal matters aside until his pack was safe, but logic had nothing to do with the way Arden was feeling, nor did it do anything to help him get rid of the feeling that Eli was going to do everything he could to resist their bond even after the danger was over. A part of Arden couldn’t help feeling hurt at the thought of being rejected without Eli ever giving them a chance to see what it would be like between them. He’d only tried to help Eli, but it was pretty obvious that Eli didn’t want him because he wasn’t a werewolf.

Blowing out a breath of frustration, Arden pushed the paperwork away. He couldn’t focus on throwing a celebration for the Asheville supernatural community when there was so much happening. If a dangerous werewolf pack was roaming the area, they should be doing something about it, but Arden had no doubt the council would be as ineffectual as usual about doing anything. They’d all lived in safety for so long that many of his fellow supernaturals couldn’t remember times when there had been danger. Arden was old enough to have seen perfectly innocent witches burned at the stake, and he well remembered the way the Cherokee and other Natives had been persecuted. Even the ones who were
